Announcements / New Cumberland claims Bob Beshore Memorial Tournament Championship
New Cumberland and Greater West Shore Nine and Under All-Stars squared off on July 1st for the championship of the Bob Beshore Memorial Tournament. New Cumberland won 7 – 1 to claim the third title for New Cumberland in this annual tournament (2003 and 2007) hosted by New Cumberland. (The tournament was renamed the Bob Beshore Memorial in 2004 following the death of Bob in the summer of 2003. Bob was involved in New Cumberland Baseball for years before becoming an umpire. Bob umpired this tournament for years when the tournament was held in Lower Allen and when it moved to New Cumberland. Bob loved good sportsmanship and it was very fitting and an honor to rename this tournament the Bob Beshore Memorial.)
The tournament began with pool play from June 24 through June 27 with six teams participating. Based on the results of pool play, teams were bracketed for single elimination play. New Cumberland and Greater West Shore advanced through to the championship. As the higher seed, West Shore (they beat New Cumberland in pool play) was home team for the championship and following player and coaches introductions and the national anthem, Greater West Shore took the field as the championship game got underway.
New Cumberland quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Lead off batter Luke Wagner reached first on an error, moved to third on single by Jimmy Losh and scored the games first run on a Jared Payne hard grounder to short. A single by Chris Dare loaded the bases. Danny Sigue, Avery Arnold and Joey Francis all three walked to bring home Losh, Payne and Dare. Batting for the second time in the inning, Wagner singled to left to drive home Sigue and the innings 5th run…due to a 5 run limit the inning came to an end. Jared Payne took the mound for New Cumberland in the bottom of the 1st. Trey Law reached base on an infield error to start the inning for Greater West Shore. Bobby Whalen lined out to Losh at short for the first out then Caden Malone hit a hard line drive back to Payne for the second out and Payne quickly threw to Arnold at first to double up Law and end the first.
Losh led off the top of the second with a double and scored on a hit by Tommy Reilly. In the bottom of the inning, Greater West Shore went quickly 3 up and 3 down as Payne gets lead off batter Nik Karoly to ground out to Reilly at second then records two strike outs. After 2 – New Cumberland 6 – Greater West Shore 0.
In the top of the third, Joseph Matter singles after one out, but is forced at second as New Cumberland goes quietly in the third. Payne records a strike out to start the bottom of the third then walks Colton Hammer. Ben Weber hits a grounder back to Payne who throws to Losh at second for the second out…Losh throws to an out stretched Arnold to complete the 1 – 6 – 3 double play…the second in the game for Payne and New Cumberland.
Time out from the action – Jared Payne pitched 3 innings – faced nine batters – no hits – no runs – 3 strike outs – 1 walk – no balls hit out of the infield – two double plays both started by him.
Back to the action. In the top of the 4th, New Cumberland sends 7 batters to the plate but can only come away with one run. With one out, Payne doubles and moves to 3rd on a past ball. Dare hits to the right side, grounding out to second for the 2nd out, but Payne scores on the play. Reilly is hit by a pitch; Mitchell Robertson batting for the first time draws a walk after fouling off several pitches, working the count full before walking. Arnold draws a walk to load the bases for Trey Moody. Moody, facing Greater West Shore pitching for the first time, quickly gets in a hole with 2 strikes before he excites the crowd with a long fly ball to left field, but it is caught to end the New Cumberland threat. Luke Wagner takes the mound for New Cumberland in the bottom of the 4th. Law grounds back to Wagner for the 1st out, Whalen draws a walk, Malone pops out to Mitchell at third and the inning ends on a strike out. After four innings – New Cumberland 7 – Greater West Shore 0.
New Cumberland went 3 up 3 down in the top of the 5th. To start the 5th inning for Greater West Shore, Justin Resto reaches on an error, Jake Sowers walks. Wagner then catches a pop up for the first out and then records a strike out for the 2nd out. Wagner hits Luke Pastor to load the bases, but Wagner gets a strike out end the Greater West Shore threat and the 5th inning…after 5 the score remained 7-0 New Cumberland.
In the 6th inning, New Cumberland once again goes 3 up 3 down. Whalen grounds out to Reilly at 2nd to begin the 6th inning for Greater West Shore. Malone reaches on an error then Karoly grounds to first and Arnold records the unassisted out. Resto singles between third and short to bring home Malone. Then Wagner records his 4th strike out of the game to end the 6th inning and to give New Cumberland a 7-1 championship win over Greater West Shore.
